The Legacy of Alvin Toffler
It was on the day of my 50th birthday when I read the news. I was at the Banksy exhibit in Amsterdam when
I turned on my phone. June 27th, 2016, Alvin Toffler one of the greatest minds of the 20th century was gone.
Toffler, along with my father, Alvin Reiss, had started Arts Management Magazine in 1962, as a way to merge
the arts commerce innovation and philanthropy. After my father’s passing – and a career in the arts and en-
tertainment, I took over with a pledge to lead AMM into the 21st century. I called Toffler, who had long since
left AMM, becoming the worlds first Futurist authoring, Future Shock and The Third Wave, to discuss the future
of AMM. Below is Alvin Toffler’s first email to me, Mr. Toffler’s first proposal for AMM, and my father’s last
translated book. We dedicate this issue of AMM to my Father, and to the worlds greatest futurist, Alvin Toffler,
may both Alvin’s rest in peace.
Sincerely,

Dear Mike,
I once shared with your father that he practically invented the whole field of arts
management, and that not many people can claim such an achievement. It was an honor
for both Heidi and I to be included as founders of Arts
Management Magazine and we are pleased to find that you will re-launch the magazine
both in print and digital form.
Heidi and I have great passion for the arts and it is our hope that the
compassion and honesty of the Arts will continue to evolve with the
accelerated rate of technological and informational change.
